If you’re an EU resident planning a language study trip or a short stay in the UK, you need to be aware of upcoming changes to travel requirements. Starting 2nd April 2025, all visa-exempt EU citizens must obtain a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA UK) before entering the United Kingdom.

But what exactly is this ETA, how do you apply for it, and when might you need an actual visa instead? Here’s everything you need to prepare for your next language immersion experience or leisure trip in the UK.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA is an electronic authorisation introduced by the British government to streamline entry for visitors who don’t require a full visa. It becomes mandatory from 2nd April 2025 for all EU travellers planning short-term stays (up to 6 months).

The ETA allows multiple entries to the UK, each up to six months, and remains valid for two years or until the passport you used for your application expires. Remember: you must travel with the same passport you used when applying for your ETA.

Who Needs the UK ETA?

From April 2025, the ETA is required for all visa-exempt travellers from the European Union—including children—who wish to enter the UK for:

  • Tourism
  • Visiting family and friends
  • Short-term studies (under 6 months)
  • Business trips

Irish citizens, British citizens, and EU residents who already hold valid settled or pre-settled status in the UK will not need an ETA.

How to Apply for the UK ETA?

Applying for the ETA is easy. Applications open on 5th March 2025, and you can apply through:

  • The official “UK ETA” app, available on Google Play and the App Store.
  • The UK government’s official website (gov.uk).

You’ll need:

  • A valid passport
  • A recent digital photo
  • An active email address
  • A credit/debit card to pay the application fee (ÂŁ10)

ETA approvals usually take around three working days. However, it’s wise to apply at least one week ahead, especially if your language course or travel plans are already confirmed.

When Do You Need a UK Visa Instead?

For stays exceeding six months or specific purposes such as university studies, internships, employment, or long-term residence, you must apply for the appropriate UK visa instead of an ETA. In these cases, visit the official gov.uk website or consult an immigration advisor.

Essential Documents for UK Travel from 2025

From April 2025, you’ll need the following documents to visit the UK:

  • Valid passport: National ID cards from EU countries are no longer accepted since 1st October 2021.
  • ETA UK: Required for short stays (up to 6 months).
  • Specific UK visa: Required only for stays longer than six months or other specific purposes mentioned above.
